Resources in the Ancient Church for Today’s Worship: Lecciones del culto antiguo para la iglesia de hoy

Through this study, Dr. Catherine G. Gonzalez helps us see the New Testament through the eyes of the believers of that time. The New Testament does not give us instructions about worship. It does not tell us much about how communion and baptism were celebrated. Yes, mention hymns, prayers, preaching, meeting, eating together. But he does not tell us how it was that such things were done. But now that we know more about the ancient cult we can see reflections of it in the New Testament - reflections that we did not see before. This book is not a new statement about how worship should take place. Its purpose is rather to make known what we know about worship in the ancient church and how it illuminates our reading of the New Testament. Try to help us see why what we call "traditional worship" is how it is, and why it is so different from the second century cult. The reader will have to decide on their own in which ways such knowledge can help us in our present situation, and in the face of the rapid changes that we face. Most likely, the way the church worships is the most effective way in which discipleship is strengthened and our Christian identity is strengthened.

Mediante este estudio, la Dra. Catherine G. González nos ayuda a ver el Nuevo Testamento a través de los ojos de los creyentes de entonces. El Nuevo Testamento no nos da instrucciones acerca del culto. No nos dice mucho acerca de cómo se celebraban la comunión y el bautismo. Sí menciona himnos, oraciones, predicación, reunirse, comer juntos. Pero no nos dice cómo era que tales cosas se hacían. Mas ahora que conocemos más del culto antiguo podemos ver reflejos de él en el Nuevo Testamento – reflejos que antes no veíamos. Este libro no es una nueva declaración acerca de como el culto debería llevarse a cabo. Su propósito es más bien dar a conocer lo que sabemos acerca del culto en la iglesia antigua y cómo ilumina nuestra lectura del Nuevo Testamento. Trata de ayudarnos a ver por qué lo que llamamos “adoración tradicional” es como es, y por qué es tan diferente del culto del siglo II. El lector o lectora tendrá que decidir por cuenta propia en que modos tal conocimiento pueda ayudarnos en nuestra situación presente, y ante los rápidos cambios a que nos abocamos. Muy probablemente, el modo en que la iglesia adora es el modo mas efectivo en que el discipulado se fortalece y nuestra identidad cristiana se afianza.
