Documentos para la Historia del Cristianismo en América Latina: Voces de Ayer y de Hoy

A common knowledge issue regarding the history of Christianity in Latin America is that it arrived in our continent, from 1492, along with the conquerors. What is not widely known is that the Christianity that arrived had two different faces. The best known is the efforts to justify the oppression of the indigenous peoples of the region and demand that they submit. The other, much less known, is the search for a radical transformation and even resistance to the abuse of power by the invaders. The documents included in this book invite the reader to go to the sources to know both faces, as well as to get an idea of ​​the native and African religions and how important elements of them have subsisted, often under a veneer of Christianity. Un tema de conocimiento común en cuanto a la historia del cristianismo en América Latina es que este llegó a nuestro continente, a partir del 1492, junto con los conquistadores. Lo que no se conoce ampliamente es que el cristianismo que llegó tenía dos rostros diferentes. El más conocido es el de los esfuerzos por justificar la opresión de los pueblos originarios de la región y exigirles que se sometan. El otro, mucho menos conocido, es el de la búsqueda de una transformación radical e incluso de resistencia al abuso de poder por parte de los invasores. Escuchará, además, voces clamando por la reforma de la iglesia, otras defendiendo los derechos de la iglesia contra lo que les parecía ser una injerencia indebida del gobierno, y otras culpando a la iglesia por todos los males de sus naciones. Leerá palabras de papas y de campesinos y escuchará acerca de las luchas y sueños de quienes viven al margen de la sociedad. A veces le parecerá difícil reconciliar todas estas voces diferentes, esta algarabía de opiniones y agendas, de fe e incredulidad, de sueños y pesadillas. Todo esto no es sino un reflejo de las luchas de la vida y de la complejidad de todas las sociedades. El lector queda invitado a leer este libro como quien se asoma a través de una ventana a la caótica belleza de la vida y la sociedad latinoamericanas.
