For the Love of God: The Epistles of John

The 2010 spiritual growth, by Justo L. and Catherine Gunsalus Gonzalez, is at once a scholarly, and yet, at the same time, a very approachable examination of a part of one of three great bodies of work of the new Testament- the Epistles of John. The main thrust of the detailed investigation of these three Epistles of John concerns the longest letter, 1 John, although the two shorter letters are given attention also. The study focuses on the Epistles as God’s Word to us today, with the emphasis on loving all humanity, as well as on revealing who among us are false teachers. Calling 1 John at the same time profound and elegant, Justo and Catherine quote John Wesley, who discovered in the letter the simplicity of language that he sought in the sermons of preachers. He also found, as our readers will find, “the sum of the whole gospel, ‘We love him, because He first loved us.'” Calling the readers to love and joy, the letters are as relevant today as they were when they were written, as they tell us of ”the emphasis on the grounding of the Gospel in the very nature of God, from the very beginning of all things.” And that ”God took on human form…to share our human life… and this is the prelude to the possibility of our nearness to God.” First John tells us that having fellowship with God cannot be separated from having fellowship with one another.
