Introducción a la Teología Mestiza de San Agustín

Apart from the authors of the New Testament, no Christian writer or thinker has left in the life and thought of the church over the centuries a trace that can be compared to that of Saint Augustine ... it was through the eyes of Augustine that the Latin-speaking medieval Christianity read the Scriptures and understood the faith. When, a thousand years more Protestant, both sides of the great debate claimed the authority of Augustine, each in support of their positions. To this day, the vast majority of Christians, reading for example the epistles of Paul, do so - without even knowing it - through the eyes of Augustine. ... while Augustine made many important and valuable contributions to Christian theology, he also left us some legacies that today it would be good to correct... its miscegenation does not consist only in the encounter between the African and the Roman. The African that is in it reflects the mestizo reality of the religion, even before the arrival of the Romans, where elements of Berber or Libyan origin were mixed with others of Punic or Carthaginian origin. And on the Roman side, we do well to speak, not of Roman culture, but of Greco-Roman culture... miscegenation with all its complexities was a reality always present in the life and thought of Augustine, as it is also today among a good part of humanity. For all this, this book is only a call to re-read the history of the church and its thought from the perspective of miscegenation and its contribution to the future.

A parte de los autores del Nuevo Testamento, ningún escritor ni pensador cristiano ha dejado en la vida y pensamiento de la iglesia a través de los siglos una huella que pueda compararse a la de San Agustín…fue a través de los ojos de Agustín que la cristiandad medieval de habla latina leyó las Escrituras y comprendió la fe. Cuando, mil años mas protestante, ambos bandos del gran debate reclamaban la autoridad del Agustín, cada cual en apoyo de sus posturas. Hasta el día de hoy, la inmensa mayoría de los cristianos, al leer por ejemplo las epístolas de Pablo, lo hace – sin siquiera saberlo- a través de los ojos de Agustín … al tiempo que Agustín hizo muchas contribuciones importantes y valiosas a la teología cristiana, también nos dejó algunos legados que hoy sería bueno corregir… su mestizaje no consiste solamente en el encuentro entre lo africano y lo romano. Lo africano que hay en él refleja la realidad mestiza de la religión, aun antes de la llegada de os romanos, donde se mezclaban elementos de origen berber o libio con otros de origen púnico o cartaginés. Y por el lado romano, hacemos bien en hablar, no de la cultura romana, sino de la grecorromana… el mestizaje con todas sus complejidades fue una realidad siempre presente en la vida y pensamiento de Agustín, como lo es también hoy entre buena parte de la humanidad. Por todo ello, este libro no es sino un llamado a releer la historia de la iglesia y de su pensamiento desde la perspectiva del mestizaje y de su contribución al futuro.
