Retorno a la Historia del Pensamiento Cristiano

Today there is a double perplexity in the Christian people: • many people do not know what to do or what to think about liturgical practices and theological positions that do not fit within the traditional polarities between liberals and conservatives or between Catholics and Protestants; • New and unprecedented situations occur with an increasingly overwhelming frequency in a world that generates hope and threats simultaneously. The traditional theologies that many of us have learned, be they liberal or fundamentalist, do not help us much in the face of such perplexities. The most conservative theologies would simply say that our problem is lack of faith, and the most liberal ones would say that it is a lack of understanding, but none of them opens the way to hope and obedience. Return to the history of Christian thought aims to show that in the ancient church there was, in addition to the distant ancestors of our fundamentalisms and liberalisms, another type of theology that can lead us to a different reading of the Bible and its message, relevant to our perplexities from today.

Hoy existe en el pueblo cristiano una perplejidad doble: • muchas personas no saben qué hacer o qué pensar en cuanto a prácticas litúrgicas y posturas teológicas que no encajan dentro de las polaridades tradicionales entre liberales y conservadores o entre católicos y protestantes; • situaciones nuevas y sin precedentes se dan con una frecuencia cada vez más sobrecogedora en un mundo que genera esperanzas y amenazas simultáneamente. Las teologías tradicionales que muchos hemos aprendido, sean liberales o fundamentalistas, no nos ayudan mucho ante tales perplejidades. Las teologías más conservadoras dirían sencillamente que nuestro problema es falta de fe, y las más liberales dirían que es falta de entendimiento, pero ninguna de ellas nos abre caminos de esperanza y de obediencia. Retorno a la historia del pensamiento cristiano pretende mostrar que en la iglesia antigua existía, además de los antepasados lejanos de nuestros fundamentalismos y liberalismos, otro tipo de teología que puede llevarnos a una lectura diferente de la Biblia y de su mensaje, pertinente para nuestras perplejidades de hoy.
